  5.     Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was reminiscing about her father,
  6. Jawaharlal Nehru, some years ago. "People say he was like the
  7. banyan tree: nothing and nobody grew in his shadow," she mused.
  8. "They are wrong. He was like the sun, and let everything and
  9. everybody grow -- even the weeds, let us be honest." It was
  10. vintage Indira, who would have denied there was a Nehru dynasty
  11. even as she came to symbolize it.

  13.     Leadership has been the Gandhi family's birthright. In a
  14. land accustomed to rajas, maharajas, kings and emperors, a
  15. republican ruling family was consistent with India's long
  16. history. It lent legitimacy to the government of a country that
  17. until independence in 1947 had been as much a state of mind as
  18. a nation-state.

  20.     No wonder Congress elders turned immediately to Sonia
  21. Gandhi, 44, as party leader. But Sonia is a widow with no desire
  22. for power. She never wanted her husband Rajiv to enter
  23. politics, much less succeed his mother. It was Sonia who cradled
  24. Indira's head as she lay dying from assassins' bullets, and
  25. friends note that after the shooting in 1984, she became
  26. obsessed with the safety of her husband and children. Behind the
  27. dark glasses she wore during public appearances, her eyes
  28. constantly searched crowds for a possible assassin. Says a
  29. friend: "What she was most afraid of in the world was losing
  30. Rajiv."

  32.     Sonia's aloofness has helped make her a formidable and
  33. somewhat unfathomfigure. She assiduously tended Rajiv's
  34. constituency in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh state, but apparently
  35. disliked politics. Though a naturalized Indian citizen since
  36. 1983, she is Italian by birth, and almost certainly would have
  37. faced strong opposition on that ground alone.

  39.     One of three daughters born to building contractor Stefano
  40. Maino and his wife Paola in Lusiana, a small town in Italy's
  41. Veneto region, Sonia was sent to Cambridge in the early '60s to
  42. study English. There she met Rajiv, who was studying mechanical
  43. engineering at Trinity College. Although both families initially
  44. opposed their marrying, it was Indira who first gave her
  45. blessing and later persuaded Sonia's parents to consent. The
  46. young Italian wholeheartedly adopted India, learning fluent
  47. Hindi and Indian cooking.

  49.     While Sonia refuses to step into the limelight, what about
  50. the rest of the family? The nearest heirs are her two children.
  51. Like his father at the same age, Rahul, 20, a Harvard
  52. undergraduate, shows no interest in politics, preferring
  53. photography and target shooting. He is the quieter, more
  54. introverted of the two children.

  56.     But her daughter Priyanka, 19, a student at the College of
  57. Jesus and Mary in New Delhi, shows flashes of her grandmother's
  58. fabled toughness and composure. She has displayed a flair for
  59. politics, and her strength during her father's funeral prompted
  60. a party worker to say, "Give her time, and she is definitely
  61. Prime Minister material."

  63.     Beyond Rajiv's immediate family, there are other Gandhis
  64. and Nehrus interested in taking up the family business. Maneka
  65. Gandhi, 34, widow of Rajiv's younger brother Sanjay, is highly
  66. ambitious and politically astute, currently holding office as
  67. Minister of Environment. But she quarreled with the family when
  68. Indira cut her out of the succession after Sanjay's death, and
  69. joined the opposition. The only other possible choice is Arun
  70. Nehru, 47, a cousin of Rajiv's and a former corporate executive
  71. who once was Minister of Internal Security in Rajiv's Cabinet.
  72. But the two fell out in 1986, and Arun does not seem to have
  73. either the political support or popular appeal needed to make
  74. a successful bid for power.
